Dickson County Imagination Library

The Dickson County Imagination Library provides a free age- appropriate hard-backed book to each child in Dickson County from birth to age 5, regardless of their income. The Imagination Library Committee raises money and accepts donations to pay for the program for our county.

There are approximately 2,975 children in Dickson County under the age of five. A little over 1,600 children are receiving the monthly books. The idea is simple: encourage children to begin reading at an early age by putting a new, age-appropriate, hardcover book in the hands of every child each month until they begin school. Results are already being recorded because of this worthy program. The Tennessee Board of Regents recently completed the first large-scale study on the Imagination Library's impact on the learning preparedness of children now enrolled in public schools. On average, Imagination Library participants were better prepared for kindergarten than children who had not participated in the program. On average, these children exceeded their teachers' expecatations. This research underscores how reading to a child early and often improves their ability to succeed right from the start of their formal education.
