The Dickson County Historical and Genealogical Society will meet at 6:30 on Monday, October 5, at the historic East Side Community Center on East Side Road. The speaker will be Mark Tummins, a resident of Dickson County, who serves as the Director of Recreational Services with the Tennessee Department of Environment & Conservation. The public is invited. Nearly 70 members of the Dickson County Historical and Genealogical Society enjoyed the hospitality of TriStar Bank on Monday, February 23. Besides hosting the meeting, TriStar made a generous donation to the Society and provided a door prize.

The speaker for the evening was Lee Curtis, Director of Program Development for the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development, who shared information about the Tennessee Civil War Trails project. The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development has been awarded a federal enhancement grant through the Tennessee Department of Tourism. The grant is an 80/20 match and will enable Tennessee to become part of the national Civil War Trails program. Tennessee is the only state where the entire state is considered a Civil War site.

Because there were no major battles fought in Dickson County, many people do not realize the county’s importance during the War. The railroad, however, was of great strategic importance to the conflict; and the railroad ran right through this county.

With the sesquicentennial of the Civil War only a couple of years away, Tennessee is hoping to place several hundred markers to commemorate the state’s role in this part of our nation’s history. For more information about the Civil War Trails project, go to www.civilwartrails.org.
